FOURTEEN YEARS ↠ Betty Cooper [DISCONTINUED] - Chapter Twenty-Three | This town is doomed - Page 2 (2024)

"So, how are you?" I asked, taking a sip of the milkshake I ordered. Stevie looked down, thinking of what to say.

"Good, I mean, as good as you can get in this town. With everything that happened with Jason, this town just hasn't been the same." Quietly nodding, I peered down at my phone, noticing the time. Eight o'clock. Where the hell are they? Turning in the booth, I furrowed my eyebrows at Veronica who was at a booth a bit away with Jughead. Ronnie shrugged and shook her head.

'Where are they?' I mouthed. Again, she shrugged.

"Sorry about that," spinning back towards Stevie, I noticed that it began to rain, "um, have you thought about coaching our basketball team again?"

Stevie slumped back into the booth, her arms crossed over her chest, "I don't know, never really thought about going back." Frowning, I moved up a bit. If I were being completely honest, I wanted to talk to Stevie, not just trick her into coming here. She was nice and I loved when she coached us.

"What did you call me here for, I mean really?" Stevie leaned forward, looking at me deep in the eyes.

"B-because I wanted talk to you, honestly." I stuttered, feeling a thin line of sweat coat my entire forehead. My head dropped to my lap, looking at my dark blue jeans that wrapped tightly around my legs.

"Amelia, I know you. You're like your brother," Stevie started again, getting closer to finding the answer that was hiding inside of me, "there's down thing else."

I was going to keep quiet, not let anything slip. But to be fair, Jarred slipped up that day, revealing to Betty just how long I had loved her. Maybe revenge is something I shouldn't have been looking for, yet I found it when my answered poured out of my dry, cracked lips.

"Jarred. I'm here because of Jarred," letting out a breath, I looked back at Ronnie and Jughead for a moment, "look, Stevie. He's gonna hate me for saying this, but it's his funeral. He's already an hour late. My brother likes you. A lot. It's actually quite painful seeing him pine after you. My friend, Veronica, and I were planning on getting Jarred over here, make him at least do something, but clearly he's not here."

After I finished, Stevie looked down, fiddling her fingers. My heart began racing, more swear breaking out. Did I just blow it? Did I ruin it for Jarred? Oh god, I f*cked up, again.

"He...likes me?" Her eyebrows furrowed while her eyes seemed to grow brighter. To my surprise, she broke out into a wide smile, giggling a little with this news.

"Wow," she breathed out, "didn't know he liked me back." I didn't f*ck it up! Thank god. Just at those words, the jingling of the door opening rung loudly into the small diner. The door his the back of the booth and the tired face of a familiar red head searched around for someone.

Veronica stood with Jughead, following Archie who was heading my way. He was out of breath, sweat dripping from his nose.

"He's gone." Archie let out between breaths.

"What do you mean?" I watched Archie intently, waiting for the answer to come piling down hard on top of me.

"I tried calling him, texting him. I gave in and asked your parents, they said they didn't know. So I went over to Derek's, some of his other friends. I checked everywhere, Amelia, Jarred's just gone." Archie took in another deep breath, Veronica grabbing ahold of his arm as she peered down at me in the now uncomfortable booth.

"So...my brother just fell of led the face of the earth." My eyes stayed wide, staring off at nothing but the table that seemed to become blurry as I continued to focus on only that.

"For a few hours now. But with it only being a few, we can't claim it's a missing persons case until the 24 hours mark has hit." Archie informed me, down moving into the booth, holding onto my shoulder.

"Do you know where he would be, Ame?" Ronnie questioned.

"I wish I did." All of us stayed silent after that, the news still sinking into my skin. I hadn't seen my brother since this morning, who knows where he is.

"This town is doomed." Jughead broke the silence, fixing his hat on top of his head.

"Yeah...it is."
