His family released the following statement:

It is with great sadness that we share that Steven G. Schorr, a longtime resident of the Las Vegas community and Nevada, has died from natural causes.

Over the past 40 years, Steve was widely recognized by local, state and national organizations for his tireless and lengthy involvement with civic organizations, youth groups and public service agencies. At one point, he served on the board of directors of 20 local nonprofit organizations.

As a former television news anchor (KSNV Channel 3, KLAS Channel 8 and KTNV Channel 13), Steve received national, regional and state awards for news journalism including two Emmy Awards for news anchoring, two National Freedom Foundation Awards, a Headliner Award and an Armstrong Award for Broadcasting. He developed numerous successful public and community relations efforts including those for Cox Communications and the Las Vegas Review-Journal newspaper.

While Steve had many accomplishments to his name, he was most recognized as the longtime spokesman for Cox Communications, where he previously served as Vice President of Public and Government Affairs. He was most proud of his family including wife Holly, sons Darrin, a Captain with the City of Las Vegas Fire Department and the late David Schorr, his grandchildren, as well as all the students – past and present – at his namesake Steve Schorr Elementary School, 11420 Placid St., in Las Vegas.

Donation and funeral services are pending.

Upon hearing of Schorr’s death, former colleagues and friends also released statements:

So sad to hear of Steve’s death. We worked as a team for almost three years, but were friends forever after. Steve had a deep, distinctive voice and I can still hear his unique sign off, “I’m Steve Schorr,” with a long emphasis on the E. A solid newsman, Steve was also a great community booster and tirelessly gave his time to charitable causes. I will miss Steve, and so will Las Vegas.

Paula Dilworth Francis, friend and former KLAS-TV news anchor

My former anchorman and friend Steve Schorr so loved Las Vegas, his adopted hometown. He devoted his time to help our community in every way ….whether it was Rescue Dogs, The Jewish Federation, Crones Disease, or anything to do with Children …Steve was always there to MC the event and work the room. He was especially proud of the school that was named after him and he gave of his time and energy to the children of the Steve Schorr Elementary School. In many ways the school helped ease the pain of losing his precious son, David 8 years ago in a plane crash. Steve poured his energy into helping others as a way to fight the heartache of David’s unexpected passing. Las Vegas has lost a special guy and I’m deeply saddened at the loss of my dear friend. My condolences to Steve’s beloved wife, Holly his son, Darrin and his grandchildren.

I worked with Steve a number of times, when he was at Channel 8 and when he was doing things in the community. The magnitude of his community involvement in Las Vegas is truly amazing. He was always kind and always a gentleman. He will truly be missed by all in Southern Nevada and leaves a vacancy in this community that will be impossible for one person to fill. Rest In Peace my friend, Rest In Peace.
